The Ocicat
Originating in the USA in the 1960's the Ocicat was born from breeding a ruddy Abyssinian with a seal point Siamese.

 


The Ocicat is a medium to large, well-spotted agouti cat of moderate type. It displays the look of an athletic animal: well-muscled and solid, graceful and lithe, yet with a fullness of body and chest.

The Ocicat has a large, long legged muscular body.

It is strikingly spotted with fur that is short, fine and lustrous.

The Ocicat has become extremely popular in USA, Europe and England and is now available in Australia.

The Ocicat's coat is short with a satin texture and a lustrous sheen. The coat should be close lying and sleek and definitely not woolly.

The Ocicat is a fairly recent, man-made addition to the cat fancy. It is a medium-sized, well-proportioned and lustrous cat that has surprising weight for its moderate size.

The Ocicat is considered to be a shorthair cat. The Ocicats are very active cats that look wild but are very affectionate. These cats can be independent but not enough to be left alone for a long time. They are very loyal and devoted to its owners.

The ocicat was developed in 1964 by accident, when Siamese breeder Virginia Daly, of Michigan, crossed a seal point Siamese female with a ruddy Abyssinian male in the hopes of developing an Abyssinian-pointed Siamese.

The Ocicat was the result of an experimental breeding program in 1964. The first Ocicat was neutered and sold as a pet.

The Ocicat's appearance suggest a wild cat, spotted with a long athletic body and balancing tail, but the truth is quite different.

History - The Ocicat originated in the 1960s and was the result of an experimental crossing between a Siamese and an Abyssinian. The goal was to obtain the Abyssinian color in the pointed areas of the Siamese.

In CFA breeders used the Ocicat for a 2 year period during the early development of the breed, terminating on 1st May 2002, but currently may only use non-pedigree domestic cats.

As such, the Ocicat is not wild, but rather warm and affectionate. An intelligent cat, it can be taught to recognize its name and come and go at your command. It is also a great cat for people who own other pets, as it is very social.

Though the patterning on the coat definitely sometimes rings true to its wild Mexican and Central American distant cousin, the Ocicat is really not part Ocelot! ...

The Ocicat is an exotic, spotted breed, selectively bred to bring the beauty of a wild cat to your home without the 'wild blood' or temperament. Although having the 'wild' appearance they are intelligent, affectionate and enjoy playtime.

Due to its popularity, the breed has been used in the matrix of many modern cat breeds, including the Ocicat, Himalayan, Burmese, Tonkinese, Snowshoe, and myriad Oriental breeds (Oriental Shorthair, Oriental Longhair, Colorpoint Shorthair, ...

It is the only spotted domestic breed selectively bred to emulate the cats of the wild

The American Shorthair was also used in the foundation to produce a medium to large breed with a distinctive spotted tabby pattern, the Ocicat is substantial but athletic, with a sleek coat.

Our fondness quite often extends to the big cats - the wild ones, so it it not surprising that some of the most popular domestic cats are those who resemble their wild brothers. Some of the 'wild' imitators, such as the Ocicat and the Egyptian Mau, ...

And now we can see the curly Munchkins, Napoleons (hybrid with Persians and Exotics), Kinkalow (a hybrid of an American Curl), Mei Toi (dwarf Munchkin, a hybrid with the Ocicat and Singapora).

The breeds that have probably contributed to the genepool of the Bengal are the Abyssinian, the American Shorthair, the Egyptian Maus, the Ocicat, and domestic shorthaired cats.
