The bands of colour, which appears on each single hair, are called Ticking.
For example: Abyssinian, Somali have Ticking, Ticked Tabby Oriental.

Ticking: As seen on the Abyssinian, a term referring to a coat with black flecks.
Tipped: A term referring to the colored ends of the hairs.
Tom: An unneutered, whole male cat.

Ticking: Darker tips of hair on the ends of the coat hairs.

Ticked, Ticking - The two or three bands of contrasting colors of a cat's hair.
Tipped, Tipping - This is used to define the contrasting colour at the tips of the hairs of some cats' coats.
Tom, Tomcat - A male un-neutered cat.

Ticking (an essential quality in this cat) of the patterned areas produces the veiled appearance. The forehead has the classic tabby "M" pattern albeit ghosted. The legs have a barred pattern.

As in the Abyssinian ticking is most important. On each hair there should be at least three bands of ticking giving six contrasting colour sections from base to tip.

Stomach is often reddish-gold in color with some ticking (broken stripes). Most are short-haired, but some are long-haired. Eyes are almond shaped and tilted.

The Abyssinian is a medium to large cat, slender, lithe, graceful and elegant breed, regal in appearance, with a short-haired lustrous coat of distinctive ticking similar to that of the wild cats. Males are somewhat larger than females.

Ticking refers to the presence of bands of different color on the hair shaft. The coat is short, silky, and close lying. Some barring is shown on the inner front legs and back knees.

Comb to reduce shedding because vigorous brushing can remove the spots on the ticking at the end of the hair shaft. A soft chamois or silk scarf gives a nice polish to the coat.

The Suqutranese standard is nearly identical to that of the Somali except the coat must be completely white with silver-white ticking and the nose-leather and paw-pads to be pink.

It is this agouti ticking (flecking) that gives the Abyssinian this rather special "wild cat " look. It is of medium size, lithe, very regal in appearance, hard and muscular showing eager activity and lively interest in its surroundings.

Soft sleek pelt, spots occurring over sides and flanks, heavy ticking but does not cause spots to become lightened. Dark bars on the neck, legs & tail. Spotting on belly cream color on belly and face, prominent light colored whisker pads.

The essence of the Somali cat is ticking - each hair is ticked multiple times in two colours. The Usual or Ruddy Somali is golden brown ticked with black. There are 28 colours of Somali in total (some organisations accept only some of these colours).

These colours are also available in a glamorous silver version, where the undercoat is replaced with a sparkling white, leaving only the ticking colour. These colours are called Black Silver, Cinnamon silver, blue silver and fawn silver.

The coat may have two or three dark bands of ticking and be medium in length. The eyes are slightly slanting. expressive large. almond-shaped highlighted by a dark line surrounded by a lighter area. The color of the eyes can be green. amber or hazel.

It is this ticking that gives the Aby this rather special "jungle" look. It is medium in size, lithe and regal in appearance.

This unusual pattern, called 'ticking', is expressed due to a single gene which causes 3 or 4 dark bands of colour, evenly dispersed on a lighter background and ending in the ticking colour.

Whatever its coat color, the Somali's individual hairs each have at least three and sometimes up to twenty bands of alternating multi-colored ticking along their length, which gives the cat an overall shimmering, iridescent appearance.

Blue is a tawny dilute with pale underparts and blue-gray ticking. Fawn is a dark cream with copper ticking. Silver is another dilute of tawny, with a warm base coat that fades to white.Rare colors include lilac and chocolate.

Almost any color or pattern is allowed except those indicating hybridization, such as the Siamese pointed pattern and colors and Abyssinian agouti ticking.

The Abyssinian has a colorful coat marked with ticking. It is of medium size and regal looking. It resembles a wild cat. A very curious cat of good temperament, loyal and affectionate. The Abyssinian makes a wonderful companion cat.

Ruddy: Orange-brown fur, ticked with dark brown or black; ears and tail are tipped with black; underside of body and inside legs are orange-brown or burnt sienna, without ticking; nose is tile red; paw pads are black or brown.

The double coat is medium length, of soft texture and extremely fine with at least two or three bands of ticking on each hair. A well developed ruff and breeches give a full coated appearance to the cat.

The coats of Singapura kittens seldom meet the breed Standards for adults: they are longer in relation to the small bodies, and also show less developed ticking.

Though the Abyssinian is a short haired cat, its' hair is medium in length, long enough to accommodate two or three dark bands of ticking. Brushing their coats with a brush suited for short haired cats is accepted by the Abyssinian.

Ruddy Abyssinians (Usual) oftentimes remind us of a mountain lion. This burnt sienna-like color is the oldest and still most popular shade of the breed. It is very common to see dark brown or even black 'ticking' throughout their under-coat.
