The Tonkinese originated in Canada, the only cat breed to do so. It came about in the early 1960's; the result of a seal point Siamese and a sable Burmese cross breeding.

The Tonkinese cat was originally the result of a Siamese to Burmese breeding. The ideal Tonkinese is intermediate in type, being neither cobby nor svelte.

The look of the Tonkinese also draws many people in. It is a medium between the svelte elegance of the Siamese and the cobby boldness of the Burmese.

It is said that Tonkinese cats tend to be the rare cats who actually enjoy playing fetch. Tonkinese cats tend to be vocal, but without quite as piercing a voice as the Siamese cat breed.

The Tonkinese breed was started by a Canadian breeder by crossing a sable Burmese with a seal point Siamese. Their short, silky, close-lying coat can be one of three patterns - solid, mink or pointed.

Tonkinese are a medium-sized short-volosed cat breed distinguished by points as with Siamese and Himalayans. They are lively, but are happy apartment cats if they have some exercise opportunity. They are commonly referred to as 'Tonks'.

Tonkinese Cats - a very lively breed
Tonkinese cats are often thought of as the ideal by those who consider the modern Siamese cat to be somewhat rat like in its appearance, and the Burmese to be too Persian and heavy.

Tonkinese are available in a rainbow of colours intermediate between their Burmese and Siamese parent breeds.

Tonkinese cats are born after breeding a Himalayan cat with a Siamese cat which has only occured in recent years. The Tonkinese breed of cat is actually very strong although that can be hard to tell by looking at it.
