The term tortoiseshell cat refers to a coloration pattern caused by a specific genetic trait. It is not a specific . The tortoiseshell markings appear in many different breeds.

Cats come in a kaleidoscope of colours - sometimes all in the one litter, and among the most popular (and some owners would say the most attractive) are tortoiseshell and gingers.

Tortoiseshell and Calico Cat Personality
Cats with patchy markings in shades of red, brown, white, and cream may differ by breed. Surveys have found Persian calicos to be maternal and Persian tortoiseshells to be calm and sweet-natured.

Tortoiseshell cats are similar to calicos but have little or no white fur. Dilute calicos are primarily white like normal calico felines, but instead of patches of orange and black, they have patches of blue and cream.

Bluecream: The colors of blue and cream should be well divided into broken patches. Face should have characteristic blaze. Eye color deep orange. Brindling not to be faulted.

Tortoiseshell - A cat patched or intermingled with black and red. This pattern is almost always found on female cats.

TORTOISESHELL POINT
Points need not be evenly broken but each point should preferably display more than one colour. Colours may be intermingled or patched; blazes, solid legs ears or tails are all permissible.

TORTOISESHELL - The sex-linked orange gene (O) is responsible to the tortoiseshell pattern. It comes from the X chromosome of the mother cat. Since a male cat has only one X chromosome, they can be either red (O) or non-red (o).

With a tortoiseshell, the three colors are blended and don't form distinct patches. A tortoiseshell may have significant portions of white as well, but the remaining colors are blended (this particular pattern is called a tortoiseshell and white).

On July 21, 1950 a tortoiseshell cat named Serena, owned by Mrs. Nina Ennismore gave birth to a litter of five kittens. One red & white coloured kitten in this litter had an unusual curly coat.

Calico (orange, black and white) and tortoiseshell (black and orange) cats are almost always female. Black and orange coat colors are carried on the same chromosomes that determine gender, specifically on the X chromosome.

The first cat discovered was a tortoiseshell named Cornflower, who was found in 1984. She was bred to males without the trait which proved to be dominant as all her kittens showed it.

Sphynx come in a variety of colors, including solid, particolor, tabby, and tortoiseshell. Their color is viewed on the pigment of the skin and on the few hairs (down) they have.

Black-and-orange cats are called tortoiseshells. Blue-creams are a "diluted" version of black and orange. When white markings are also present, the cats are said to be tricolors, calicoes, or "money cats.

In 1987, in Bozeman Montana, Peggy Voorhees of the Bozeman Humane Society saw an unusual tortoiseshell and white female kitten in a non-pedigreed litter of five that had been born to a feral blue tortie and white mother in a shelter in Wyoming.

Tortie: Also called tortoiseshell. Usually a female. The coat colors are cream, red and blank intermingled together.

Tortoiseshell cats for instance are almost always female with the odd male being invariably sterile, pure white cats are often deaf and red tabbies are most often males, hence the title 'ginger tom'.

Also seen are smoke and tabby tortoiseshell and particular or bicolor. There are also shaded versions of the solid colors.

The Siberian too is of many colors such as Tabby, colorpoint and tortoiseshell. Their fur coat is not made up of unusual colorations and patters. Siberians of color point are known as Neva-Masquerade.

In addition to the solid colors Scottish Folds are often seen in bi-color variations of white and one of the above colors as well as Tortoiseshell, Calico and Tabby.
