A person's BMI, or body mass index, is based on height and weight. It's often used to determine if a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. But BMI doesn't consider muscle mass.

You have a low amount of body fat. If you are an athlete, this can be desirable. If you are not an athlete, a lean BMI can indicate that your weight may be too low which may lower your immunity.

BMI also may not accurately reflect body fatness in people who are very short (under 5 feet) and in older people, who tend to lose muscle mass as they age.

The BMI chart gives you your BMI, which is a number that comes from using a calculation based on a person's weight and height.

Note: As BMI does not measure body composition in any way - it is effectively a flawed and faulty index. However it is still used by many government health institutions.

Body mass index (BMI) has been used by doctors for many years as a simple means of assessing whether someone's weight puts their health at risk. But, increasingly, the value of this familiar measure is being called into question.

Young children naturally start out with high body fat, but tend to get leaner as they get older. Girls and boys also have different body compositions.

"Overweight" is defined as an excess amount of body weight, including fat, muscle, bone and water. "Obesity" is defined as an excess amount of body fat. Thus an athlete or muscular person may be overweight without being obese.

BMI also fails to consider where fat is deposited, which determines whether someone's body shape is identified as an apple or a pear.

A BMI from 18.5 up to 25 is considered in the healthy range, from 25 up to 30 is overweight, and 30 or higher is obese.

A BMI of 18.5 or less means you are underweight for your weight and height, while 18.6 to 19.9 means you are lighter weight than average. A BMI between 20 to 25 is normal and average for most women. If your BMI is 26 to 29.

A BMI of 25 to 29.9 indicates a person is overweight. A person with a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

BMI—This relates weight to height and is used as part of the nutritional assessment of individuals. BMI is the weight (in kg) divided by the height (in meters) squared. The acceptable healthy range is 20–25.

I was still not at my ideal BMI. I am vegetarian and was a very healthy eater! the last 2 years have been so bad I abandoned all my excercise and eating way too much.
