Calipers. A caliper is a device that is used to measure the amount of body fat on different parts of the body. Special computations provide your percentage of body fat based on the various measurements of skinfold thickness.

Calipers
You're probably familiar with the "pinch" test, which uses calipers to measure the skin-fold thickness in several areas of your body. The idea is that the thickness of the fat under the skin reflects your total body fat.

The calipers come with instructions, or you can use these formulas, which I have used and found to be very accurate:
4 Site formula for men (abdomen, suprailiac, thigh, tricep) ...

Special calipers are used to measure folds of skin and fat in several spots on the body and average them.

Special calipers are used to measure folds of skin around specific spots on the body. This is not a precise method; but it is relatively accurate if a training professional conducts the test.

Body Fat Caliper: Results can be wildly inaccurate depending on the quality of the calipers (plastic or heavy-duty), number of body parts measured and skill of the person using the calipers.

Skinfold calipers can be found online, at health supply stores, and at pharmacies.

Determine the test sites. Most tests are done on the right side of the body. However, scars, injuries, or amputation may necessitate testing on the left side.

I do own a caliper. Would you be able to provide me with instructions on how to determine body fat percentage using lots of fat roll measurements and frame measurements over my whole body?

There are several methods for estimating the proportion of body fat on an athlete's body: underwater weighing (equipment is expensive and limited in availability); skinfold measurements taken by high-precision calipers on three to five sites ...

To estimate body fat, skinfold measurements can be made using skin-fold calipers. Most frequently, tricep and subscapular (shoulder blade) skin-folds are measured.

Make an appointment with a personal trainer at a gym and have the trainer perform a caliper test. The caliper test is a skin fold test to determine amount of lean tissue (muscle, connective tissue, bones etc. versus body fat).

*To do the skinfold test you must have fat calipers. You can buy them here for $14, (they also come free with the GHF fitness program).

f Skinfold thickness exceeding 48.5 mm was too large for the caliper; measurements were not recorded for these individuals and they were excluded from analyses involving triceps skinfold.

Buy callipers that come with a booklet explaining how to work out body fat percentage from the measurements taken. Body fat callipers range from about $200 down to $15 for basic plastic calipers with booklet.

"The number alone without context is just a number." He points to more accurate tests of body composition like being weighed underwater and using calipers to measure skin fold thickness on various parts of the body.
