DEXA

The DEXA machine is a test that is used to measure bone density. However, it can also measure body fat percentage and can show you where it's located.

These methods include hydrostatic (or underwater) weighing, Dual X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), Bioelectrical Impedance, and Skin Fold Testing.

The most commonly used method to diagnose osteoporosis is to measure bone mineral density using dual energy X-ray absorbitometry (DEXA scans). This test is performed routinely in people who have risk factors or a prior diagnosis of osteoporosis.

DEXA Scanner: Excellent, although expensive, means of determining body composition using X-ray technology in a doctor's office or other medical facility ...

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). This is another very accurate way to assess body fat. During this test, the patient must lay flat for approximately 20-30 minutes while every section of their body is systematically X-rayed.

The most accurate measures are to weigh a person underwater or to use an X-ray test called Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). These methods are not practical for the average person, and are done only in research centers with special equipment.

The most accurate measures are to weigh a person underwater or in a chamber that uses air displacement to measure body volume, or to use an X-ray test called Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, also known as DEXA.

This can be done with skinfold calipers or a variety of other devices (calipers might not be the best method if you have large folds of loose skin. Look into impedance analysis, underwater weighing, DEXA or Bod Pod).

The least accurate is the electrical impedance. Basically, untrained and uneducated people often do the testing without adequate preparation. Another method using low dose xray (DEXA) but is usually used for research.
