A high protein diet is a typical bodybuilders diet, however an increasing number of weight loss diets also recommend high levels of protein - in order to maintain/increase muscle tissue whilst burning fat.

High protein diets have the reputation of being able to produce quick weight loss. However, many scientists suggest that most of the initial weight loss from protein diets is water rather than fat.

In high protein diets most of your daily calories come from protein. This limits your intake of foods that contain carbohydrates. Carbohydrate containing foods include: milk, fruit, fruit juice, grains, bread, cereals, pasta, and vegetables.

Certain high protein diets claim that carbohydrates make us fat. This is a little misleading.

High proteins diets are currently very popular, the most famous being Dr Atkins. High protein diets were popular in the 1970's, before saturated fat and heart disease became closely associated.

High Protein diets typically obtain 30%-60% of their calories from protein, 15%-30% from fat and the remainder from carbohydrates. They tend to rely heavily on seafood and lean meat, which makes them difficult or impossible for vegetarians.

High protein diets can cause the loss of calcium and a lowering in urinary citrate levels, which may lead to osteoporosis and kidney stones (Ornish,2004).

So the average person reads the above information on the protein needs and benefits of a high protein diet but remembers in the back of their mind another myth about high protein intakes.

Fact: High protein diets may eliminate many of the best sources of vitamins and minerals critical to good health because they limit whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans.

Low carb, high protein diets cause an unhealthy physiological state called ketosis, a type of metabolic acidosis. You may have heard the phrase, "fat burns in the flame of carbohydrate".
