Iodine - Iodine is a trace mineral needed to make thyroid hormones, which are necessary for maintaining normal metabolism in all cells of the body.

Iodine supplementation may be necessary for vegans in countries where salt is not typically iodized, where it is iodized at low levels, or where, as in Britain or Ireland, animal products are used for iodine delivery.

An Iodine deficient diet can also cause hypothyroidism as can surgery and drugs (e.g. iodides, lithium, phenylbutazone), and it may also be caused congenitally.

If iodine is not present in our foods the function of the thyroid gland is disturbed and goiter afflicts us.

High levels of iodine in the diet does impact some acne sufferers - by causing new outbreaks of acne lesions. Note that very salty (iodized salt) foods such as chips etc, contain high levels of iodine and should be avoided.

Iodine will likely not be found in chelated form. Kelp is commonly the supplemental form for iodine.

Swallowing more iodine will jump start a thyroid gland only if you are deficient in this mineral (you'll know if you are iodine-deprived because you will have developed a goiter, or an enlargement of the thyroid gland).

Bladderwrack contain iodine, which helps to enhance thyroid function. Dosage: Take 150 milligrams at breakfast and another 150 milligrams lunch for two months.

Fucus Vesiculosus contains iodine which has been found to elevate thyroid function, however, with the amount contained in the patch, it is most unlikely to be significant enough to cause weight loss.

Other minerals like chromium, copper, iodine, iron, selenium, and zinc are called trace minerals because you only need very small amounts of them each day. The best way to get enough vitamins is to eat a balanced diet with a variety of foods.
