In his book Dr Atkins' New Diet Revolution, Atkins made the controversial argument that the low-carbohydrate diet produces a metabolic advantage because "burning fat takes more calories so you expend more calories.

 


What's especially interesting - giving confirmation of the metabolic advantage of a high protein diet - is that the foods provided in this particular study were low carb, but NOT typical Atkins fare.

"The diet works because the extra protein reduces muscle loss while the low-carbohydrate component gives you low insulin, allowing you to burn fat," says Layman. "Some people refer to this as the metabolic advantage of a protein-rich diet." ...
