Foods that are low in nutrient density are foods that supply calories but relatively small amounts of micronutrients, sometimes none at all.
The central idea of the program is based on increasing the nutrient density of the diet. Fuhrman says that most people don't get enough vitamins and minerals in their daily diet and that this is the cause of food cravings and overeating.
Of course there's more to it than just calories; like the nutrient density, calorie density, meal frequency and the ratio of calories from carbohydrate, protein and fat. There's also proper training, recuperation and sleep to factor in too.
Buy food with nutrient density in mind. Don't look at cost per ounce or pound...instead look at cost per nutrient. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes are among the most nutrient-dense foods.
