You can't open a magazine, turn on the TV or even talk to a friend these days without getting word of a new diet plan that promises to help you drop pounds.

Popular diets come and go, but the problem of being overweight remains. In the past few years, high protein diets have made a comeback. But, if they are the "magic bullet", why is the incidence of overweight and obesity increasing around the world?

Popular diets such as the South Beach Diet and the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet are also low carb diet plans that have become popular with dieters who have tried and failed at the Atkins diet.

Many popular diets, such as the South Beach Diet, Atkins, the Hampton's Diet offer a 2 week "induction" phase during which weight loss is substantial.

Like many popular diets, the GI plan has three phases: the 'start-it' phase, which you follow for two weeks; the 'lose-it' phase, which you follow until you reach your goal; and the 'keep-it' phase to help maintain your weight loss.

Some of the popular diets promote low carbohydrate and high protein intakes. According to nutrition experts, these are nothing more than low-calorie diets in disguise, but they have some potentially serious consequences.

There are many popular diets designed to lower carbohydrate consumption. Reducing total carbohydrate in the diet means that protein and fat will represent a proportionately greater amount of the total caloric intake.

One of the most popular diets these days is the low-carb diet that is high in protein and low in carbs, like those promoted by "The Atkins Diet Revolution," "Enter The Zone," and "Sugar Busters," just to name a few.

One of the more popular diets out there, the Body For Life plan focuses on eating non-processed carbohydrates, health fats and plenty of lean protein.
