This has been used by (apparently) over 1 million people, and is endorsed by John Hopkins University. It's a meal replacement plan around the 800-1000 calories mark (which puts it outside the strict definition of a VLCD).

VLCDs in general should not be attempted without consulting a physician, and the Cambridge diet is no exception. The diet is not suitable for people whose work or athletic training requires high levels of physical activity.

VLCD formulas are not the same as the meal replacements you can find at grocery stores or pharmacies, which are meant to subsitute for one or two meals a day.

1. A VLCD, very low calorie diet. Replacement of food with nutritionally complete soups, shakes and bars used on a medically-monitored programme, with health checks every 28 days.
2. Motivation, counselling and support in groups led by a counsellor.

Some VLCD's need a doctors authorization, but other fast weight loss diets (such as Medifast) may be done without this.
What About Claims By Popular Diets?

Liquid diets, like the one you described, fall under the category of very low calorie weight loss diets (VLCD).

New Direction is a medically-supervised comprehensive ketogenic VLCD program that uses high protein low carbohydrate meal replacement supplements.

Medifast's very-low-calorie-diet (VLCD) is doctor-supervised and comprises a program of fortified liquid (and solid) meal replacements, containing 450-500 calories per day.

Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD): A short-term weight loss diet, VLCDs are commercially prepared formulas of 800 calories or less that replace all usual food intake. Not all VLCD need be formulas; they could just be low calorie meal plans.

A Very Low Calorie Diets, or VLCD, usually refers to a weight-loss plan prescribed by a physician for obese patients. VLCDs are done under medical supervision, and they are usually only recommended for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of over 30.

It is called the Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD). This extreme diet is expensive and must be medically supervised. It usually only prescribed for patients who have immediate and serious health risks caused by their obesity.
