Alli® is a lower dose version (60 milligrams) of the prescription drug Xenical®. Made by GlaxoSmithKline PLC, it is the first weight loss drug to be approved for over-the-counter (OTC) use.
Currently, two drugs, sibutramine (Meridia) and orlistat (Xenical), are considered safe enough to prescribe for longer -- up to one year. In its heyday, however, fen-phen was sometimes used for as long as two years.
Orlistat (Xenical) is a prescription medicine that prevents some of the fat calories you eat from being absorbed in your intestines. Also, orlistat (Alli) is available over the counter. Alli contains half of the medicine that is in Xenical.
This over-the-counter version of the prescription weight-loss drug Xenical works by decreasing the amount of fat absorbed by the body in every meal you eat. But all that fat’s got to go somewhere, leading to side effects like oily diarrhea.
Prescription drugs such as Meridia and Xenical are only available with a doctor's prescription.
