An abdominal tap is a procedure used to remove fluid from the abdomen.
How the Test is Performed
This test may be done in an office setting, treatment room, or hospital.

Definition Also known as peritoneal tap or abdominal tap, paracentesis consists of drawing fluid from the abdomen through a needle.

The test is performed by abdominal tap, a needle aspiration of the peritoneal cavity. A sample of fluid is sent to the laboratory for gram stain and culture preparation. The sample is examined regularly for the growth of microorganisms.
