The severity of this condition can vary widely. In some instances, the baby has no symptoms of the disease. In other cases, it can lead to death of the baby before or shortly after birth.

One complication that may occur is a reaction to an incompatible blood type (transfusion reaction, ABO incompatibility, hemolytic reaction). Symptoms include chest pain, trouble breathing, fever and chills, and low blood pressure.

ABO incompatibility may cause hemolysis by a similar mechanism. ABO incompatibility usually occurs in type O mothers.
