Alcohol Abuse
Alcohol abuse affects the whole family. The health effects of alcohol abuse can include heart disease, liver disease, and even cancer. Treatment consists of medical attention, prescription medications, or treatment centers.

Abuse may be physical, sexual, or emotional. Abuse may also take the form of neglect. Remember, some behaviors that are found with abuse may also be found with other conditions.

Abuse in a relationship can be both physical and mental. Your partner should never threaten you or hurt you, and should never threaten to harm or harm any of your possessions or people that are important to you.

Abuse during pregnancy is the mistreatment, battering, or abuse of a pregnant woman. The term includes physical, sexual, and emotional violence. Abuse affects women of all ages and from all social and economic backgrounds.

Abuse has many faces. It can be overt or covert, but it is always hurtful. If you are consistently being hurt physically, verbally, or emotionally, the first step towards freeing yourself is recognizing the signs of abuse.

Abuse can happen to anyone. It happens to women and to men. It happens to all social classes, and to people who speak all languages. It happens regardless of sexual orientation or religion. Poverty and substance abuse increase the risk.

Abuse is difficult to detect because many of the signs are subtle and the victim is often unwilling or unable to discuss the abuse. Victims may hide abuse because of shame, fear of retaliation, or a desire to protect the perpetrator.

Drug abusers use substances to modify their mood or state of mind, even when doing so causes difficulties at work, school, or with relationships, health, or the law.

Drug abuse affects society in many ways. In the workplace it is costly in terms of lost work time and inefficiency. Drug users are more likely than nonusers to have occupational accidents, endangering themselves and those around them.

Vocal abuse is any behavior or occurrence that strains or injures the vocal folds (or vocal cords). This may include excessive talking, throat clearing, coughing, inhaling irritants, smoking, screaming, or yelling.

Sexual abuse can also happen in the case of two adults. When one adult has power or influence over the other adult and uses this power to take advantage of the other person sexually then there is sexual abuse.

Alcohol abusers are "problem drinkers", that is, they may have legal problems, such as drinking and driving, or binge drinking (drinking 6 or more drinks on one occasion).

Misuse, abuse and dependence on prescription drugs are major health problems for women. Two-thirds of all tranquilizers, such as diazepam (Valium), chlordiazepoxide (Librium) and alprazolam (Xanax), are prescribed to women.

Narcotic abuse is a serious, but treatable disorder. When the problem is not treated, people who abuse narcotics usually suffer significant mental and physical problems. The sooner treatment begins, the more favorable the outcome.

Drug abuse
The use of certain drugs, particularly cocaine and those taken intravenously, has been linked to heart disease and stroke. Cocaine can cause abnormal heartbeat, which can be fatal, while heroin and opiates can cause lung failure.
