People with a skin condition called acanthosis nigricans are at risk for developing metabolic syndrome. Acanthosis nigricans is a darkened, velvety thickening of the skin. Almost 90% of women with these skin changes have insulin resistance.

Another dermatological feature, acanthosis nigricans may occur, due to the reduced sensitivity to insulin.

High insulin levels can cause thickening and darkening of the skin on the back of the neck (acanthosis nigricans). In women, high insulin levels can cause increased body hair, acne, and irregular periods.

Dark velvety pigmentation (acanthosis nigricans) may also occur in the axilla and neck.
Excess body hair, enlargement of genitalia (clitoromegaly) and occasional ovarian cysts may be seen in the females.

This photograph demonstrates the hyperpigmented, brownish, velvety lesions of acanthosis nigricans. This skin condition may occur in skin folds such as the axilla (armpit - pictured here), neck, and other areas.

Persons with insulin resistance may have acanthosis nigricans, which is darkened skin areas on the back of the neck, in the armpits, and under the breasts. In general, however, persons do not directly experience symptoms of metabolic syndrome.

Patches of skin on the armpits, neck, and groin may also display acanthosis nigricans, unusually dark, thickened patches of skin with multiple delicate growths. Skin tags may be present on the surface of the skin and on the tissues lining the mouth.
