The acrochordon is a polypoid soft, fleshy tumor common in the flexures and on the neck of those over middle age. Usually small, lesions can extend more than 1 cm from the surface and are asymptomatic unless traumatized.

Definition
Cutaneous skin tags are small, usually harmless (benign) skin growths.
Some small tags spontaneously rub or fall off painlessly and the person may not even know they had a skin tag. Most tags do not fall off on their own and persist once formed. The medical name for skin tag is acrochordon.
Acrochordon"A small tag of skin that may have a stalk (a peduncle). An acrochordon may appear on skin anywhere although the favorite locales are the eyelids, neck, armpits (axillae), upper chest, and groin.

Causes
Cutaneous tags are very common skin growths. They usually occur after midlife and are usually harmless and noncancerous (benign).

BCC in individuals with BCNS may appear during childhood as small acrochordon-like lesions, while larger lesions demonstrate more classic cutaneous features.
Other skin tumors associated with BHD are called trichodiscomas and acrochordons. Acrochordons are also known as skin tags. The lung cysts in BHD do not cause problems with breathing and do not increase the risk of lung cancer.
Other characteristic skin abnormalities are trichodiscomas and acrochordons. A trichodiscoma is a tumor of the hair disc while an acrochordon is a skin tag.
Skin tags (acrochordon), which are small, soft pieces of skin that stick out on a thin stem. They most often appear on the neck, armpits, upper trunk, and body folds. They commonly appear after middle age.

Why skin tags occur
Anyone can develop skin tags, but they are particularly common in older people. Some people are prone to developing them for no apparent reason.
A skin tag is medically also termed a cutaneous papilloma or an acrochordon. However, a skin tag is best known as a skin tag.
