Acute porphyrias - the condition mostly affects the nervous system. The skin is occasionally affected.

Symptoms of acute porphyria can vary. The most common symptom is a severe abdominal (tummy) pain. The nervous system is also commonly affected to cause symptoms such as muscle weakness and numbness in parts of the body.

Acute porphyrias cause intermittent attacks of abdominal, mental, and neurologic symptoms.

Acute porphyrias. These include forms of the disease that cause predominantly nervous system symptoms (neuron porphyrias) and, in some cases, skin symptoms, too (neurocutaneous porphyrias).

Other types of porphyria, called acute porphyrias, primarily affect the nervous system. These disorders are described as "acute" because their signs and symptoms appear quickly and usually last a short time.

Hepatic porphyria, also known as acute porphyria, is a very serious condition. Symptoms may include mental illness, seizures, severe neuropathy, gastrointestinal complaints, tachycardia, and arrhythmia.

" The "acute porphyrias" are characterized by sudden attacks of pain and other neurological manifestations. These acute symptoms can be both rapidly-appearing and severe.

These include barbiturates, sulfonamides, and many others (see the Acute Porphyria Drug Database). Attacks are often precipitated by low intake of carbohydrates and calories in an attempt to lose weight.

Clarithromycin in combination with ranitidine bismuth citrate should not be used in patients with a history of acute porphyria.
