ADD or ADHD?
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has been called a number of things over the years. Not so long ago, ADHD was called ADD (attention deficit disorder), or ADD with hyperactivity.

ADD Inattentive Type
Teens and adults with this disorder are not overly active. They do not disrupt the classroom/office, so their symptoms might not be noticed. Their main difficulty is the inability to focus and concentrate.

ADD is thought to affect 5% to 10% of school-age children. Boys are 10 times more likely than girls to be affected by ADD.

Definition
ADHD is a problem with inattentiveness, over-activity, impulsivity, or a combination.

Although there is no independent, validated test for ADD, some well-tested diagnostic interview methods have proved useful.

If you choose not to medicate your ADD child, you may want to consult with a behavior therapist. Ask your child's doctor for referrals to medical professionals who can offer advice for dealing with and helping an ADD child.
