How is ADHD diagnosed?

ADHD is a problem with inattentiveness, over-activity, impulsivity, or a combination. For these problems to be diagnosed as ADHD, they must be out of the normal range for the child's age and development.

ADHD, once called hyperkinesis or minimal brain dysfunction, is a common mental disorder among children. It affects some 3-5% of all children - perhaps as many as 2 million American children. Two to three times more boys than girls are affected.

ADHD comes in a variety of forms. It can be subdivided into two categories, inattentive disorder and impulse-hyperactive disorder, or a combination of the two.

ADHD is a persistent condition, which arises in early childhood and continues into adulthood. Adults who were diagnosed with, or experience the symptoms of ADHD as children are more likely to have ADHD as adults.

ADHD is a frustrating problem. Alternative remedies have become quite popular, including herbs, supplements, and chiropractic manipulation. However, there is little or no solid evidence for many remedies marketed to parents.

ADHD is the most common behavioural disorder in the UK. It is estimated that the condition affects 3-9% of school-aged children and young people. Worldwide, around 2% of adults may be affected by ADHD.

At various times, ADHD has been called attention-deficit disorder (ADD), hyperactivity, and even minimal brain dysfunction. But today ADHD is the preferred term because it more accurately describes all aspects of the condition.

In people who have ADHD, the areas of the brain that control attention use less glucose than the brains of other people. This indicates that the areas are less active. The lower activity level seems to cause inattention.
