Adrenomyeloneuropathy

Disease AdrenoleukodystrophyAdrenomyodystrophy

Adrenomyeloneuropathy
a variant of adrenoleukodystrophy, distinguished by later onset (in adult life). Both conditions cause adrenal insufficiency and demyelination.

Alternate Names : Adrenoleukodystrophy, Adrenomyeloneuropathy, Childhood cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy, ALD, Schilder-Addison Complex
Definition ...

Adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN)
This is the most common form. Symptoms of AMN can present in the 20s. It progresses slowly. They can include: ...

Adrenomyeloneuropathy ... excessive muscle tone, progressive leg weakness
Adult low grade infiltrative supratentorial Astrocytoma ... weakness, seizures
Adult Panic-Anxiety Syndrome ... fatigue, muscle tension, trembling ...

The same genetic change can lead to adrenomyeloneuropathy in adults. This form typically affects the spinal cord and the adrenal glands. Female carriers of the gene may show similar but usually much milder symptoms.

A milder form of ALD called adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN) usually has a symptom onset at the age of 20 or later. Approximately 40-45% of people with ALD have this type. The first symptoms are typically a progressive stiffness and weakness in the legs.

Signs and symptoms of the adrenomyeloneuropathy type appear between early adulthood and middle age.
