The terms postmenopausal, involutional, senile, and age-related osteoporosis have been used to describe primary osteoporosis in elderly patients. Estrogen deficiency is an important factor in men as well as women.

Primary osteoporosis is age-related osteoporosis, with no secondary causes.

Alendronate is approved to increase bone mass in men with age-related osteoporosis. Alendronate and risedronate are approved to treat men and women with steroid-induced osteoporosis.
