Agranulocytosis
Agranulocytosis is a serious condition whereby white cell counts are abnormally low. This means that the body's ability to fight off infections is severely impaired. Some medications may increase the risk of agranulocytosis.
Agranulocytosis: A marked decrease in the number of granulocytes. Granulocytes are a type of white blood cell filled with microscopic granules that are little sacs containing enzymes that digest microorganisms.
Agranulocytosis is a condition that results from failure of an individual's bone marrow to produce a sufficient quantity of white blood cells, or increased destruction of the white blood cells. As a result, the white blood cell count will be low.

A rare but possibly life-threatening side effect is agranulocytosis, a problem that causes your body to make fewer white blood cells.
This is because a sore throat may be the first warning of a serious side-effect to carbimazole (agranulocytosis - which is a low level of white blood cells). This serious side-effect needs urgent treatment.
Agranulocytosis, a potentially serious but reversible condition in which the white blood cells that typically fight infection in the body are destroyed, is a possible side effect of clozapine.
However, patients taking clozapine must be monitored closely with regular blood tests because the medicine can cause a blood disorder called agranulocytosis, a disorder in which there are an insufficient number of white blood cells.
The reason is because patients on Clozaril are at risk for developing a deadly condition known as agranulocytosis, which is a severe reduction in the numbers of white blood cells. White blood cells help defend the body against infections.
This disorder, which can occur at any age, is associated with infections and ulcerative lesions of the throat, GI tract, other mucous membranes, and skin. Its severest form is known as agranulocytosis.
