Amebic liver abscess is caused by Entamoeba histolytica, the same organism that causes amebiasis, an intestinal infection also called amebic dysentery. The organism is carried by the blood from the intestines to the liver.

Serologic tests are positive in about 95% of patients with an amebic liver abscess, in > 70% of those with active intestinal infection, and in 10% of asymptomatic carriers. Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) is the most widely used.

Symptoms of an amebic liver abscess include fever and abdominal pain on the right, just under the ribs where the liver is located.

In the United States, amebic liver abscesses occur most frequently in young Hispanic adults. An amebic liver abscess can result from direct infection of the liver by E. histolytica or as a complication of intestinal amebiasis.

Metronidazole is used for infections of the small intestine, amebic liver abscesses, dysentery and trichomonas vaginal infections. It also is used to treat infections of the colon caused by the bacterium, Clostridium difficile.
