Ammonia
colorless gas with a very sharp odor. Made both by humans and by nature, ammonia dissolves easily in water and evaporates quickly. Liquid ammonia is found in many household cleaners.

Ammonia - chemicals in urine may be changed into ammonia, which ‘burns' the skin.
Thrush (candida) - thrush exists in faeces (poo) normally but the levels rise sometimes without obvious causes.

Ammonia levels in the blood rise when the liver is not able to convert ammonia to urea. This may be caused by cirrhosis Opens New Window or severe hepatitis Opens New Window.
For this test, a blood sample may be taken from either a vein or an artery.

Ammonia (NH4+) is produced by cells throughout the body, especially the intestines, liver, and kidneys. Most of the ammonia produced in the body is used by the liver in the production of urea.

Ammonia accumulates in toxic levels if the urea cycle does not convert nitrogen from protein metabolism into urea for excretion into the urine. A series of biochemical reactions are necessary to complete the urea cycle.

Arginase deficiency: A very rare urea cycle disorder caused by a deficiency of the enzyme (arginase) needed to convert ammonia to the urea which can then be removed in the urine.

Quinidine, C,0H24N202, is isomeric with quinine, from which it differs in crystallizing in prisms instead of needles, in being dextroand not laevo rotatory, and in being insoluble in ammonia except in much excess.

Treatment of hepatic coma and encephalopathy is aimed at elimination or treatment of precipitating factors and lowering the blood ammonia levels by decreasing the absorption of protein and nitrogenous products from the intestine.

This causes a build-up of ammonia in the bloodstream.
more carbohydrate. Carbohydrate is the body's energy supply. A healthy liver makes glycogen from carbohydrate. The glycogen is then broken down when the body needs energy.

Normally, hydrogen ions combine with ammonia to form a proton known as an ammonium ion. The ammonium ion then becomes trapped because it is now too large and must be excreted into the urine.

The urea cycle is a process in which waste (ammonia) is removed from the body. When you eat proteins, the body breaks them down into amino acids. Leftover amino acids turn into ammonia and must be removed from the body.

The lack of the NAGS enzyme results in excessive accumulation of nitrogen, in the form of ammonia (hyperammonemia), in the blood.

Struvite stones - These stones are made of magnesium and ammonia (a waste product), and are related to urinary tract infections caused by certain bacteria.

The medicine is then 'tagged' to a natural chemical such as glucose, water, or ammonia. This makes what is called a radiotracer. Once the radiotracer is inside the body, it goes to parts of the body that use the chemical it has been tagged to.
