Anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid
Updated by: Stephen Grund, MD, PhD, Chief of Hematology/Oncology and Director of the George Bray Cancer Center at New Britain General Hospital, New Britain, CT. Review provided by VeriMed Healthcare Network.

Anaplastic carcinoma has the worst outcome of all the types of thyroid cancer. It is usually fatal despite treatment.
Follicular carcinomas are often fast growing and may invade other tissues, but the outlook is still good -- most patients are cured.

Anaplastic carcinoma, also called undifferentiated thyroid cancer, is an uncommon, aggressive type of thyroid cancer that accounts for 1% to 2% of thyroid carcinoma (Sharma).

Anaplastic carcinoma is an undifferentiated cancer that accounts for about 2% of thyroid cancers. It occurs mostly in elderly patients and slightly more often in women. The tumor is characterized by rapid, painful enlargement.

These tumors comprise papillary carcinoma (60%-75%),[44] follicular carcinoma (10%-20%), medullary carcinoma (5%-10%), and anaplastic carcinoma (<1%).

Anaplastic cancer (anaplastic carcinoma). This rare form of thyroid cancer is sometimes called undifferentiated cancer because it looks very different from normal thyroid tissue under a microscope.

Anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid
Causes
Anaplastic thyroid cancer grows very rapidly and is an invasive type of thyroid cancer. It occurs most often in people over age 60. The cause is unknown. Thyroid function tests are usually normal.

The exception is a rare type of thyroid cancer called anaplastic carcinoma. An aggressive tumor that rapidly invades the neck, anaplastic carcinoma is likely to spread to other parts of the body and is extremely hard to treat.
