Angioedema treatment
While the term ‘angioneurotic edema' sounds really scary, it is actually a fairly common condition. More commonly called angioedema now, it is not a disease in itself but a symptom.

What is Angioedema?
Angioedema is a reaction characterized by fluid accumulation leading to swelling (oedema) of the skin, mucosa and submucosal tissues. Sometimes this can extend to deeper tissues.

Angioedema is often associated with urticaria. In fact, almost 50% of patients who present with urticaria also have angioedema.[6] Angioedema, with or without concurrent urticaria, may often have different etiologies.

Angioedema is a swelling, similar to hives, but the swelling is beneath the skin rather than on the surface. The hives are called welts. It is also possible to have angioedema without hives.

Hereditary angioedema
Transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait, hereditary angioedema is secondary to the absence of an inhibitor of the first component of complement, C1 esterase inhibitor. Severe generalized urticaria can result.

Angioedema is a type of swelling of the skin and mucous membranes that generally occurs in soft tissue of the skin and mucous membranes.

Angioedema is like hives, only the welts are larger and form at a deeper layer in the skin. This causes severe swelling, usually in the face, near the eyes and mouth.

Angioedema without urticaria occurs with C1 inhibitor deficiency, which can occur as an autosomal dominant characteristic (hereditary angioedema) or be acquired with lymphoproliferative disorders.

Overview, Causes, & Risk Factors
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is caused by low levels or improper function of a protein called C1 inhibitor. This problem affects the blood vessels.

Hives and angioedema are related because they are similar reactions to the same basic cause, a chemical called histamine.

Hereditary angioedema is a disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of severe swelling (angioedema). The most common areas of the body to develop swelling are the limbs, face, intestinal tract, and airway.

In most cases, hives and angioedema are harmless and don't leave any lasting marks, even without treatment. The most common treatment for hives and angioedema is antihistamine medications.

Tissue swelling, called angioedema, may occur with urticaria. This affects the lax tissues around the eyelids, lips, neck and groin. Occasionally, an inherited deficiency of the C1 esterase inhibitor enzyme leads to marked swelling without urticaria.

When hives occur around the face, particularly around the lips and eyes, they are called angioedema. Angioedema may also occur on the hands, feet and throat. Hives can come and go suddenly, often without any apparent cause.

Urticaria (hives; raised areas of reddened skin that become itchy) and angioedema (swelling of throat tissues) together affect approximately 15 percent to 24 percent of the US population at some time in their lives.
