Overview
A rare condition characterized by diffuse sclerosis and clusters of capillaries in parts of the brain as well as a marbled appearance to the skin.

 


Angiomatosis - A diseased state of the vessels with the formation of multiple angiomas.
Anomaly - An irregularity or deviation from normal; an abnormal structure.
Ascites - An accumulation of serous fluid in the abdominal cavity.

Bacillary angiomatosis is a re-emerging bacterial infection that is identical or closely related to one which commonly afflicted thousands of soldiers during World War I.

Bacillary angiomatosis is so characteristic today of AIDS that it is an AIDS defining disease, according to the CDC (Centers For Disease Control).

Definitions:
1. an infection of immunocompromised patients by a newly recognized bacterium, Bartonella henselae, characterized by fever, granulomatous cutaneous nodules, and peliosis hepatis in some cases.

Bacillary angiomatosis is a systemic disease described by Stoler and associates in 1983. There are unusual cutaneous papules and nodules distinct from Kaposi sarcoma.

Angiomatosis
an abnormality of blood vessels characterized by the formation of many angiomas. For a general description, see angiomatosis. Numerous varieties of angiomatosis are known, with terminology reflecting tissue composition.

Definition
Sturge-Weber syndrome is a rare disorder that is present at birth. A child with this condition will have a port-wine stain birthmark (usually on the face) and neurologic problems.

In persons with HIV/AIDS the disease (usually called bacillary angiomatosis) can cause severe inflammation of the brain, bone marrow, lymph nodes, lungs, spleen and liver. The disease can be fatal in persons with HIV.

The abnormal growth of blood vessels into tumors is called angiomatosis, and it makes the tumors difficult to treat because of the ample blood supply. Surgery is an option for some tumors, as is radiation.
