Anosmia

Disease Anorexia NervosaAnosognosia

Anosmia - loss of smell
The exact mechanisms behind the sense of smell remain a mystery. Odour molecules in the air are breathed into the nose, and funneled inside the nasal cavity to the olfactory epithelium (tissue).

How is anosmia diagnosed?
A doctor diagnoses lack of the sense of smell with:
A family and personal history.
An exam of the head, neck, and nose.

Smelling difficulties
Smelling problems occur either because of obstruction or injury of nasal passages, or due to problems with neurological processing. There are multiple causes, as listed below.

Anosmia
disorder of olfaction characterized by loss of sense of smell.

Alternate Names : Loss of smell, Anosmia
Definition
Impaired smell is the partial or total loss of the sense of smell.

Anosmia
Definition The term anosmia means lack of the sense of smell. It may also refer to a decreased sense of smell. Ageusia, a companion word, refers to a lack of taste sensation.

anosmia - absence of the sense of smell.
aphasia - total or partial loss of ability to use or understand language; usually caused by stroke, brain disease, or injury.
aphonia - complete loss of voice.

anosmia - absence of the sense of smell.
anovulation - failure of the ovaries to produce or release mature eggs.
antacids - medications that balance acids and gas in the stomach.

SYMPTOMS"One does not detect odors. This can occur either temporarily or regularly.
CAUSES"This occurs when one has a cold or rhinitis (nasal inflammation, resulting from colds or allergy).

Because distinct flavors depend on aromas to stimulate the olfactory chemoreceptors, smell and taste are physiologically interdependent. Dysfunction of one often disturbs the other.

Considerations
The loss of smell can occur as a result of nasal congestion or blockage of the nose and isn't serious, but it can sometimes be a sign of a nervous system (neurological) condition.

The loss of the senses of smell (anosmia) and taste (ageusia) are the most common chemosensory disorders.
The reduced ability to smell (hyposmia) or to taste sweet, sour, bitter or salty substances (hypogeusia) are also common.

Total inability to detect odors is termed anosmia. As for changes in the perception of odors, some people notice that familiar odors become distorted. Or, an odor that usually smells pleasant instead smells foul.

Anosmia is the inability to detect odors at all. People who experience changes in how they sense odors may notice that familiar odors are distorted or that something that normally smells pleasant now smells foul.

Reduction of the sense of smell is termed hyposmia. Total inability to detect odors is termed anosmia. Smell disorders have many causes. Most people who develop a smell disorder have recently experienced an illness or an injury.
