Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is accepted as one of the most common diseases involving human oral tissues. They are painful, small ulcers in the mouth or on the inner lips caused by an assortment of viruses.
Mouth sores — Mouth sores (called aphthous stomatitis) can develop during flares of Crohn's disease. They are usually found between the gums and lower lip, or along the sides or underside of the tongue (picture 1). Mouth sores are often painful.
Canker sores: Canker sores, also known as aphthous stomatitis or mouth ulcers, are common, but mostly harmless, sores. Stomatitis means inflammation of the mouth.
The most common cause for mouth sores is aphthous stomatitis, or canker sores. A single canker sore or several of these sores can develop spontaneously. These mouth sores usually last about 10 days.
Some viruses can also produce blisters in the mouth and throat ("aphthous stomatitis").
Breathing through the mouth or smoking can produce throat dryness and soreness.
