AST (aspartate aminotransferase) is an enzyme found in high amounts in heart muscle and liver and skeletal muscle cells. It is also found in lesser amounts in other tissues.

Greater than normal levels of AST may indicate:
acute hemolytic anemia, which is the breakdown of red blood cells by the body's own defense system.
acute pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas.
