Astrocytoma
Overview
Astrocytomas are primary central nervous system tumors that arise primarily in and rarely spread away from the CNS parenchyma contained within the cranial vault.
Astrocytoma: A tumor that begins in the brain or spinal cord in small, star-shaped cells called astrocytes. The location of the tumor depends on the age of the person.

Astrocytomas are classified according to a grading system developed by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Tumours (Astrocytomas) of the spinal cord are graded 1-4. Low-grade astrocytomas (grade 1-2) comprise about 75-90% of tumours, and high-grade astrocytomas comprise the remainder (grades 3-4).
Astrocytic tumors include astrocytomas (less malignant), anaplastic astrocytomas, and glioblastomas (most malignant).
Oligodendroglial tumors also can vary from less malignant to very malignant.

ASTROCYTOMAS. Named for their star-shaped cells and the tumor's radiating tentacles, astrocytomas can develop on any part of the brain or spinal cord. Noninfiltrating astrocytomas grow slowly, and rarely spread to nearby tissue.
