An atrial septal defect causes the oxygen-rich blood from the upper-left heart chamber (left atrium) to flow to the upper-right heart chamber (right atrium) and mix with the oxygen-poor blood.
An atrial septal defect is an opening in the atrial septum, or dividing wall between the two upper chambers of the heart known as the right and left atria. ASD is a congenital (present at birth) heart defect.

Atrial septal defect (ASD) repair
The atrial septum is the wall between the left and right atria (upper chambers) of the heart. There is a natural opening before birth that usually closes on its own when a baby is born.
Atrial septal defects are classified into three main types:
1. OSTIUM PRIMUM DEFECT: Normally, the first septum (wall) of the atrium will fuse with the endocardial cushions.
An atrial septal defect is classified by the position of the hole in the septum, as well as by size. When the hole is in the middle of the septum, it is called a sinus venosus defect.
Atrial septal defect. About half the people with Ebstein's anomaly have a hole between the two upper chambers of the heart called an atrial septal defect.
Atrial Septal Defect
Many babies who are born with atrial septal defects (ASDs) have no signs or symptoms. However, as they grow, these children may be small for their age.

atrial septal defect (ASD)
In this condition, there is an abnormal opening between the two upper chambers of the heart - the right and left atria - causing an abnormal blood flow through the heart. Children with ASD have few symptoms.
