How the test is performed:
A sample of tissue is needed. A biopsy or aspiration will be done, depending on the suspected site of infection.

Atypical mycobacterial infections in the tonsils or teeth may spread contiguously to the major salivary glands. The PPD may be negative, and the diagnosis may require biopsy and tissue culture for acid-fast bacteria.
