What is avascular necrosis?
Avascular necrosis is bone death that occurs when the blood supply to the bones is decreased or stopped. Without an adequate blood supply, the bone breaks down and dies and collapses.

Alternate Names : Avascular necrosis, Osteonecrosis, Ischemic bone necrosis, AVN, Aseptic necrosis
Definition
Osteonecrosis is bone death caused by poor blood supply to the area. It is most common in the hip and shoulder.

Avascular necrosis of the hip may cause pain in your groin. Pain may radiate down your thigh to your knee. Pain is usually worse when standing or walking.
Avascular necrosis of the wrist may cause wrist pain and finger weakness.

Most commonly, a fracture occurs at the narrowest part of the scaphoid (known as the waist). This is where the blood supply to the scaphoid bone enters.

Avascular necrosis (Freiberg's disease), a condition that usually affects the second metatarsal head, occurs when a temporary or permanent loss of blood to the feet causes the death of bone tissue. Without treatment, the bone itself may collapse.

Avascular necrosis means that the blood supply to the femoral head has been permanently altered by the femoral head slipping. There is no way to identify children at risk for avascular necrosis or to prevent this complication.

osteonecrosis (avascular necrosis): bone death caused by lack of blood supply to the bone. A hip fracture can happen close to the network of blood vessels that go to the head of the femur.

A problem known as avascular necrosis or osteonecrosis of the jaw has rarely developed in people who used these drugs. This is seen more commonly in people with cancer who are given a monthly dose of the aminobisphosphonate.

Sometimes the failure of the pieces of bone to grow back together leads to a problem called avascular necrosis. In avascular necrosis, part of the bone dies because it does not get enough blood.

This is called femoral vascular necrosis or avascular necrosis. This complication may occur depending on the type of fracture and the anatomy of a person's blood supply to the head of the femur bone. This is more common with femoral neck fractures.

Teens with unstable SCFE, however, do have a greater chance of developing other problems, such as stiff hips, early arthritis, leg length differences, or avascular necrosis (where part of the "ball" dies from lack of blood supply).
