In 2003, influenza A (H7N7) infections occurred in the Netherlands among persons who handled infected poultry and among their families during an outbreak of avian flu among poultry.
Avian flu is caused by Influenza A virus, the only species in the viral genus called Influenzavirus A. This genus is one of five that makes up the viral family Orthomyxoviridae, which includes all influenza viruses.

AVIAN FLU
Avian influenza (bird flu) is caused by a strain of influenza virus that originally infected birds. Infected birds include chickens, ducks, and geese, among others.
The avian flu virus (H5N1) has been shown to survive in the environment for long periods of time. Infection may be spread simply by touching contaminated surfaces.
The H7N7 avian flu outbreak in the Netherlands resulted in 89 confirmed human cases but only one death. The avian flu virus H9N2 infected three children in Asia; all of them recovered.
