Definitions:
1. an infection of immunocompromised patients by a newly recognized bacterium, Bartonella henselae, characterized by fever, granulomatous cutaneous nodules, and peliosis hepatis in some cases.

 


Bacillary angiomatosis is a systemic disease described by Stoler and associates in 1983. There are unusual cutaneous papules and nodules distinct from Kaposi sarcoma.

In persons with HIV/AIDS the disease (usually called bacillary angiomatosis) can cause severe inflammation of the brain, bone marrow, lymph nodes, lungs, spleen and liver. The disease can be fatal in persons with HIV.

Doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, or erythromycin for bacillary angiomatosis (see below)
Aminoglycosides for Encephalitis (brain infection)
The overwhelming majority of children with this disease do very well, and have no permanent complications.

Bartonella henselae : A species of gram-negative bacteria that is the etiologic agent of bacillary angiomatosis (ANGIOMATOSIS, BACILLARY). This organism can also be a cause of CAT-SCRATCH DISEASE in immunocompetent patients. [1]
