A birthmark is a skin marking that is present at birth. Birthmarks include cafe-au-lait spots, moles, and mongolian spots.

Any mark that is present on the skin at birth, or that develops soon afterwards, is called a birthmark. They are very common - most children have a mark of some sort. Most are harmless and some go away as the child grows.

Do birthmarks need to be treated?
Most birthmarks are harmless and need no treatment. Some will even fade or disappear over time. Some kinds of birthmarks can be removed with surgery or lightened with a laser.
Birthmarks are areas of discolored and/or raised skin that are apparent at birth or within a few weeks of birth. Birthmarks are made up of malformed pigment cells or blood vessels.

Common Types Of Birthmarks
Mongolian spots are smooth, blue or blue-gray birthmarks that usually are found across the lower back and buttocks. A child may have one or several Mongolian spots.
Melanocytic nevus is related to common birthmarks and they can appear to be a simple beauty mark. These growths are pinkish to brown in coloration and they are less than a centimeter thick.
Birthmarks get their name because they develop on the skin of babies before or just after they are born. Hemangiomas are a bunch of tiny blood vessels - that's why they usually look red or purple.
Birthmarks may appear as moles (melanocytic nevi) that vary in color from light brown to blue, and are either flat or raised above the surface of the skin. They are usually benign, but do rarely develop into malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer.
Other skin problems include moles and birthmarks. Neither are health problems in and of themselves (although moles should be watched for changes that may indicate skin cancer). Birthmarks vary in size, color and location.
Salmon patch is the name given to a very common group of birthmarks seen in babies. The birthmarks are caused by expansions (dilations) in tiny blood vessels called capillaries.
