Bleeding in the stomach or the intestines can change the color of stool. If bleeding occurs in the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine, the stool may turn black and sticky, described medically as black, tarry stool.

Bleeding in the stomach or gut. This is more common if you have a stomach or duodenal ulcer. It is also more likely if you take a steroid medicine or an anti-inflammatory medicine (such as ibuprofen) as well.

It is said that spironolactone can cause an excess of bleeding in the stomach. There is no direct link between spironolactone and stomach bleeding but if stomach bleeding is experienced then the spironolactone could cause more blood than normal.

They said it was ulcers (bleeding in the stomach). Then the pain became very intense. Again, the ER said there was nothing they could do. I refused to leave and was admitted for observation.

If your doctor suspects anaemia because of internal bleeding in the stomach or intestines, several tests may be used to discover the source of the bleeding.

Often blood that is caused by bleeding in the stomach will look black and tarry. A tarry stool has a black, shiny, sticky appearance and looks like tar on a road.
