What is Bloom syndrome?
Bloom syndrome is an inherited disorder characterized by a high frequency of breaks and rearrangements in an affected person's chromosomes.

Bloom syndrome, a chromosome breakage disorder. Symptoms include growth retardation, skin discoloration and typical facial features. The disease often leads to cancer and sometimes mental retardation.

Loss of genomic stability is also the major cause of Bloom syndrome. This disorder shows increased chromosomal breakage and is diagnosed by increased sister chromatid exchanges on chromosomal analysis.

Children who are born with conditions that cause an abnormal immune system, such as Down syndrome, ataxia telangiectasia, and Bloom syndrome, may have a higher risk of developing leukemia.

If your child has certain genetic syndromes, including Fanconi anemia, Bloom syndrome, Kostmann syndrome, and Down syndrome, he may be at a higher risk of developing AML than other children.
