Mastitis (inflammation or infection of the breast) is common in breast-feeding women. A course of antibiotics usually clears mastitis. There is no need to stop breast-feeding if you have mastitis.
What is mastitis?
Breast infections (mastitis) causes pain, erythema, and swelling; an abscess can produce adiscrete mass. Infections are extremely rare except during the puerperium (postpartum) or after penetrating trauma. They may occur after breast surgery.
Breast infection: Infection of breast tissue usually caused by bacteria, most often staph (Staphyloccocus aureus), which are found on the skin and enter the breast through a break in the skin or nipple, as during breast-feeding.
Breast infections don't have to interrupt breast-feeding. Antibiotics can treat most of the common breast infections, and the woman can continue to breast-feed.

If you have an apparent breast infection that fails to improve despite a week of treatment with antibiotics, ask your doctor to do a further breast evaluation. This may include imaging studies such as ultrasound, mammogram or MRI scan and a biopsy.
