Breast Ultrasound
A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to make a picture of the tissues inside the breast. A breast ultrasound can show all areas of the breast, including the area closest to the chest wall, which is hard to study with a mammogram.

Breast ultrasound - An ultrasound uses sound waves to look at breast tissue and can tell if a lump is a fluid filled cyst or a solid lump.

Mammography, breast ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging for surveillance of women at high familial risk for breast cancer. Journal of Clinical Oncology, 23: 8469 - 76.
Leach MO, Boggis CR, Dixon AK, et al (2005).

Breast ultrasound is able to determine whether lumps are fluid-filled sacs (cysts) that are typically benign or solid masses that are more typically malignant. Neither mammography nor ultrasound tests can confirm or rule out a diagnosis of cancer.

Newer tests include breast ultrasound, fine needle aspiration, and magnetic resonance imaging. Breast ultrasound and fine needle aspiration are particular useful if a lump can be felt. Ultrasound is getting better all the time.
