Definition
A breath holding spell is an involuntary pause in breathing, sometimes accompanied by loss of consciousness. It usually occurs in response to an upsetting or surprising situation.
Breath holding spells appear to be a reflexive response to fear, a confrontational situation, a traumatic event (for example: pain), or to being startled.

In addition, what appears to be a seizure may actually be something else (eg, breath holding spell). Having one seizure does not mean that a child has epilepsy. Many clinicians require a child to have more than one seizure before diagnosing epilepsy.
Children who suffer from this type of seizure are known to go through breath holding spells. Absence seizure mostly affects toddlers and usually the main cause is a minor injury and when the child has a seizure, his face becomes completely colorless.
