One of the first things to consider if you have brittle nails is your daily routine. People who have their hands in water several times a day are particularly susceptible to problems with fingernails.

Brittle Nails:
Brittle nails and flaking of nails are very common due to excessive dryness of the nail plate. The nail plate is made up of dead keratin cells held together by a natural glue of fats and water.

Weak or brittle nails: Even though the nails typically thicken with age, the nails are generally not as strong in older individuals. The nails are usually weaker, more brittle, and prone to breakage in older adults.

Brittle nails can be prevented and treated. Conventional treatment for brittle nails may include strong nail 'building' polishes, creams and treatments; however, these treatments are chemical and may be accompanied by unpleasant side effects.

Brittle nails are often a normal result of aging, but may also be due to certain diseases and conditions.
