Bronchiectasis (pronounced bron-kee-ek'-tas-is) is a condition of the airways in the lungs. These airways (bronchial tubes) are tube-like structures that branch from the trachea into the right and left lungs.
Bronchiectasis is a disease that causes localized, irreversible dilatation of part of the bronchial tree. Involved bronchi are dilated, inflamed, and easily collapsible, resulting in airflow obstruction and impaired clearance of secretions.

How bronchiectasis occurs
In bronchiectasis, the cilia that line the bronchial tubes are destroyed, causing a build-up of dust, mucus and bacteria. Excessive amounts of mucus form on the back of the throat, which produces sputum.
