BRONCHITIS, the name given to inflammation of the mucous membrane of the bronchial tubes (see Respiratory System: Pathology) . Two main varieties are described, specific and nonspecific bronchitis.

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the air passages inside the lungs. When the trachea and the large and small bronchi inside the lungs become inflamed due to infection this is known as bronchitis.
