Cafe-au-lait spots may occur in people with the genetic disorder, neurofibromatosis.
Nearly everyone has moles, which usually appear after birth.
Mongolian spots are more commonly seen in darker-skinned populations.

Cafe-au-lait spots are light tan or light brown spots that are usually oval in shape. They usually appear at birth but might develop in the first few years of a child's life.

The classic symptom of NF I is light brown patches of pigment on the skin, called cafe-au-lait spots. Benign (non-cancerous) skin tumors associated with this condition are called neurofibromas.

History: Individuals with NF1 usually report pale, coffee-colored patches (cafe-au-lait spots) on the skin of the trunk and pelvis, and may report tumors on or under the skin (dermal tumors or fibroma molluscum).
