Every year U.S. physicians diagnose nearly 5,000 cases of carcinoid tumors. Most are in the gastrointestinal tract including the stomach, small intestine, appendix, colon, and rectum.

Adenocarcinoid tumor
Overview
A rare type of tumor that occurs in the gastrointestinal tract and tends to metastasize. The symptoms are determined by the location of the tumors.

Carcinoid tumors develop from neuroendocrine cells in the GI tract (90%—see Tumors of the GI Tract: Small-Bowel Tumors), pancreas, and pulmonary bronchi (see Tumors of the Lungs: Bronchial Carcinoid).

CARCINOID TUMORS IN THE APPENDIX
Treatment of localizedgastrointestinalcarcinoidtumors in the appendix may include the following:
Appendectomy.
Appendectomy and localexcision.
Appendectomy, bowelresection with anastomosis, and removal of lymph nodes.
